WHS LEADERSHIP
Class Rules & Expectations
“To be as much as we can, we must dream of being more”
Congratulations!! You have been selected by your teacher and/or your peers to be a part of the Windsor High School Leadership Program! As selected WHS Leadership students and Officers, your actions represent not only yourself, but also the Leadership program, the Leadership teacher and the school at large. With this amazing responsibility comes opportunity!
This class is designed to empower you to become a more effective leader on the WHS campus and in the community. You will explore various components of what it means to be an effective leader and group member through planning and implementing activities, programs, and events for the Windsor High School community.
Expectations To create an effective and successful learning environment within our class, students are expected to be positive and respectful any time you are representing WHS. This includes: While in class; during committee, class or club meetings; during Senate Forum; when meeting with Administration and Advisors; at all WHS activities and those sponsored by another school; during all community service activities; any and all times you are representing WHS.
The expectations put upon you, as role models and Leadership students include (but are not limited to)…
« all school rules (i.e. dress code) to be upheld.
« all students and officers to fulfill their required duties, roles and responsibilities.
« deadlines to be met.
« all students to take responsibility for their actions.
« all students to uphold the values imbedded within the “10 Commandments of WHS Leadership”.
« respectful and effective communication towards fellow officers, Administration and Advisors (and in return, expect the same from them).
« the willingness to include non-leadership students in all class/ASB/Leadership activities.
« acceptance and respect of differing opinions and procedural changes.
« the willingness to take action…when action is needed.
« leadership related tasks to take precedence over others while in class.
« all students to put 100% into their efforts.
« all students to consider that they are a part of a team when expressing their individuality.
Required Materials Leadership binders will be checked about once per grading period. All students are required to have a 3-ring binder for Leadership ONLY, that includes:
1. Dividers with tabs
2. Eight clearly divided sections that include:
Structure of Class
Start of Class: The first 5-15 minutes of each class is dedicated to all class “business time”. Students are expected to be seated and ready to work as a team. Expectations for this time include:
« Having your class binder out and ready to go.
« Cell-phones silenced and put away.
« Respectful listening to all that are speaking. Respect is a key element of leadership and is the required method of communication and behavior at all times.
« Involving yourself in class discussion, including being ready to answer questions or speak out regarding your committees.
« If you are late to class, you enter silently and do not disrupt the class.
This is the only time of day we are together as a class and is an essential element of the program.
Failure to respect this important time of the day may be interpreted as a lack of commitment to the program.
Committee time: The majority of each class will be devoted to the organizing, planning and implementing of activities and programs for WHS. Each student will serve on 2-3 committees.
End of class: Roll will be taken 10 minutes before the end of class. Prior to leaving, all students need to make sure that they have cleaned up their work space and are not leaving any messes behind. The class will be dismissed after the room has returned to order.
Class Rules
1. No eating in class; clear bottles of water okay.
2. Be alert, be inquisitive, be interactive; absolutely no headphones!
3. Three bathroom passes will be given per semester; unused passes may be turned in for extra credit.
4. Do not leave the classroom without permission! When permission is granted, you are only to go to the approved destination. All Leadership students are to wear a Lanyard every time they are out of the classroom representing Leadership. Failure to adhere may result in loss of privilege.
5. Be flexible with your time. Most WHS activities require out of class time commitments. Be willing to put in your share of the effort. Communicate with your parents when out of class time is needed.
6. Prepare to work hard, have fun and make memories for all at WHS.

Community Service “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi
As role models, Leadership students are expected to become involved in and support Windsor High School and its community. They have the opportunity to make a contribution to their community by giving time and energy and receiving invaluable communication and leadership skills in return. Community service opportunities will present themselves throughout the year and will be shared in class.
As part of a grade, Leadership students will interact with and assist each other and their surrounding communities by completing 48 Community Outreach Hours each year. A completed time card is required for verification of hours. Incomplete time cards will not be accepted.
Guidelines
Community service hours each grading period, with write-up, signed.
· All activities should be pre-approved by the Leadership teacher.
· Students may not use hours that have been completed for another project or class unless they have been prior approval and have appropriate documentation. For example: If a student receives points for Band by playing at the football game, that does not count for community service as well. **Exception: Senior Project (seniors may use up to 9 of their completed Senior Project hours…. Junior Projects = 4.5 hours)
· Students may not gain Community Service Hours for committee work if they are a member of that committee.
· Community Service cannot be earned during the school day with the exception of open blocks.
What Community Service IS…
What Community Service IS NOT…
Community service hours are worth 30% of the Leadership grade, which will be broken down into 9 hours per grading period:
9 hours = A+ 5 hours = C
8 hours = A 4 hours = C-
7 hours = B 3 hours = D
6 hours = B- 2 hours = D-
0-1 hours = F
*Anything above 9 hours will be carried over to the next grading period
Advice from the Trenches
Nothing is a “go” until it has been approved by your Teacher, the Activities Director AND Administration
Never assume…always ask
Compromise is key
Stick to your deadlines
Everything comes with paperwork
Stay organized
Use the calendar as a guide. For example…you may think you have 2 weeks to get something done, but in reality you only have 5 B-days
You can be dropped from Leadership if you receive a semester grade of a C or lower. Please don’t let that happen!
