Welcome to Windsor High, the 2014-15 school year has begun! Integrated Science is one of the three classes in your core; together with your English and Global Studies teachers, you will engage in project-based instruction and an integrated core structure.
There are three 6 week grading periods that make up the two eighteen-week semesters. Each semester is divided into units of comprehensive material, to make it easier for you to understand and learn the information that we are covering in class. Below is a course overview that you must not take lightly!
Classroom Rules
There are six easy-to-understand rules:
1. Help create a positive learning environment; be respectful of yourself and others.
2. No eating in the classroom; clear bottles of water are okay.
3. Be in the classroom when the bell rings; tardies are unacceptable.
4. Heads and hands up. Be alert and ask questions. That means no headphones!!
5. Keep the classroom and lab clean; pick up all garbage, even if it is not yours.
6. No electronic devices of any kind unless authorized by the teacher. They will be confiscated. This is your only warning.
Any deviation from the above rules will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
Classroom Communication
Communication is the key to success. We will spend a lot of time and effort fine-tuning communication skills, including both oral and written. With this, comes the necessity of not only articulating thoughts and opinions, but knowing the appropriate time and place to do so. There are two ways to communicate appropriately in the classroom.
b. Arrange to speak with me individually at a time that is convenient for both of us.
Together we are going to create a safe and positive learning environment. I want you to be here, and I want you to want to be here as well. We will have fun together, and that fun depends on you. Be curious, have patience, ask questions, and participate in your own learning. I know you have heard it before, but you will get out of the experience what you put in to it. Work hard, and you will be rewarded!
Plagiarism
Absolutely no plagiarism will be tolerated. That includes the work of your classmates and friends. When groups work together, you share data, and nothing else. Evidence of plagiarism and/or cheating will not be tolerated and will result in a zero grade.
Grading Policy
Class grades will be based on the following categories:
Classwork: 30%
Tests: 30%
Homework: 20%
Quizzes: 10%
Semester Core Project: 10%
Classwork
This is work done in class and includes, but is not limited to:
Homework
This is work done outside of the classroom and includes, but is not limited to:
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given mid-way through each unit. These will focus on the most recent material covered. Some quizzes may be oral, most will be short answer, and a few will be multiple choice. These are closed book, unless otherwise announced. There are no “re-takes” of quizzes. The lowest quiz grade each semester will be dropped from the overall class grade.
Tests
A test will be given at the completion of each unit. There will be approximately four unit tests each semester and one comprehensive semester final.
Integrated Science Binder
Binders will have an accumulation of student work and will be checked approximately once each grading period.
All students are required to have a three-ring binder for Science ONLY, that includes:
1. store-bought dividers or dividers made of construction paper only,
2. five clearly divided sections that include:
General Information
Classwork
Laboratory Experiments
Homework
Test/Quizzes
3. binder paper, and
4. each Unit Syllabus and these Rules and Expectations in the General Information section. WITHOUT THESE, 50% IS THE MAXIMUM POSSIBLE BINDER GRADE.
Pens and Pencils
All students are required to supply writing utensils, and be ready to work when the bell rings. Those students who cause a disruption because they are unprepared will lose Classwork points. Pens and pencils will not be loaned out, please bring your own.
Textbooks
Textbooks will be kept at home.
Make-Up Work
Half credit will be given for late work. By definition, late work is any assignment that is not completed when the first bell rings.
Not completing homework will result in half credit, even if it is only lacking just one answer (give your best response).
Make-ups for chapter tests and scheduled quizzes will be given only at pre-announced times. “Pop” quizzes cannot be made up as they are considered part of your class participation grade for that particular day. However, if these accumulate to more than two, then the missed quizzes can be made up by doing an alternative assignment. Do not miss class and you will not miss class assignments.
Attendance
It is imperative that all students attend all classes. With every day missed, valuable information is lost. If a student must miss class and has an excused absence, they must get all missed work within five days of returning to school. At that time, due dates for the work will be arranged. You will not be reminded to get missed work. Material missed in class on a day that you were absent will still appear on your test or other assignments, and you will not be exempt from the responsibility from learning it because you were absent that day. Since much of the class is participatory in nature, frequent absences will be detrimental to your grade. In addition, tests not made up within one week will result in a zero. If a student has an unexcused absence, you will not be allowed to make up the work, and will receive a zero for all work missed.
Tardies
Class begins when the bell rings. Students should be in the class and ready to work. If a student has an unexcused tardy, they will not be allowed to make up the work, and will receive a zero for all work missed.
Complete Sentences
All work must be written in complete sentences, unless otherwise specified. Points will be lost from each assignment that is not written in complete sentences. Take this seriously.
